Recent trends in the diagnosis of osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a progressive systemic disease of the skeleton that is characterized by reduced mass and impaired mikroarhitektonika bone, leading to enhanced bone fragility and increased risk of fractures. The development of osteoporosis is painless and progresses slowly and gradually, without manifested symptoms over the years, so that patients learn about the disease only at later stages of development or, most often after the occurrence of fracture. By dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the spine and femoral neck can be diagnosed, to estimate fracture risk and monitor treatment. In the aspect of diagnostic methods such as peripheral dualenergy X-ray absorptiometry (rDXA), quantitative ultrasound bone (QRS) and quantitative computed tomography (QCT) have their place.
