Anatomic variations of the bile ducts in MRCP

P. Getsov, B. Vladimirov, G. Nedelkov

Current medical practice requires a good knowledge of segment anatomy of the liver and biliary tree. MRCP provides an opportunity for non-invasive investigation of variations in the anatomy of the biliary tract. A three-year prospective study has been carried out. For this time were made 384 MRCP studies in 351 patients. In our study were distinguished 5 types of confluence of the bile ducts from the right and left lobes into common bile duct. Modified classification of Choi et al was used. Determining the type confluence was possible in 344 patients (98%). In our study group a „typical” anatomy in forming the confluence of the bile duct was observed in 56%. A triple confluence, the simultaneous emptying of the right anterior duct, right posterior duct and left hepatic duct into the common hepatic duct was observed in 18%. Abnormal infusion of right posterior hepatic duct in its different variants was observed in 21% of cases. MRCP is a reliable method for the assessment of the biliary anatomy.
