PSWE/ARFI elastography of liver and spleen for evaluation liver stiffness in patients with chronic liver diseases
Katya Doykova, Silvia Tsvetkova
Hepatic fibrosis is a major step in the development of cirrhosis and portal hypertension in chronic viral hepatitis. In turn, portal hypertension leads to ascites, encephalopathy, esophageal varices. Liver biopsy is the reference method for staging of fibrosis. US elastography is increasingly being used in clinical practice in assessing the degree of liver involvement and the prognosis of the disease. New data on splenic stiffness indicate the more important prognostic role than hepatic stiffness in terms of complications of viral hepatitis. The purpose of the review article is to show the current elastography capabilities in the assessment of splenic and liver density and the predictive value of the results.
