Infrabony Defects Presence and Parameters. An Orthopantomographic Analysis

Infrabony defects(ID) are in the field of nonsurgical and surgical periodontal therapy. They are treated by conventional, grafting and regenerative techniques. Aim. To examine the presence of infrabony defects, their parameters, characteristics and relations- using two dimensional orthopantomographs-OPG. Materials and Methods 1393 two dimensional digital orthopantomograpic images were examined. Examined is frequency of infrabony defects: according to gender, age, number of teeth, quadrant, and degree of alveolar bone resorption. ID’s characteristics are desцribed- position of defect, angle, depth, width, condition of tooth with ID To establish correlations and relations between ID parameters we used: descriptive analysis, nonparametrictest x2, correlation analysis and independent t-test statistical analysis. Results. Presence of the ID among surveyed patients and teeth is statistically significant. Most defects are associated with a moderate alveolar bone resorption. ID prevail in the maxilla and in molars. Most frequently ID are found in intact teeth. Increasing the degree of alveolar bone resorption increases number and presence of ID. Conclusion. The presence of the ID is statistically significant among patients, but they are present in minor part of all examined teeth. ID are found primarily in radiographically intact teeth, which requires timely treatment due to the ensuing complications. Increasing severity of alveolar bone resorption increases presence and number of ID, which requires accurate diagnosis of their presence and overall morphology.
