Evaluation of mandibular incisival and lingual canals in the mental area using digital volume tomograhy

Abstract.

The lower jaw is a frequent object of surgeries, including placing of dental implants. Although the area between mental foramina are often considered as low risk, there exist channels such as mandibular incisive canal (MIC) and lingual vascular canals (LC) associated with potential complications. They contain a neurovascular bundle, which may be important in surgical planning to avoid nevrosensory disturbances and bleeding.The authors examined 102 patients by digital volumetomography (DVT,CBCT) for presence of MIC and LC,measured LC diameter and the distance from vestibularcortical surface to middle lingual canals. The results showed that the MIC is presented in 91.1%
(93), median LC in 79.4% (81), lateral LC in 24.4% (25) ofindividuals. High percentage of visible canals through digital volumetomography opens opportunities for more precision in planningand avoiding potential complications of surgical interventions in the anterior mandible.
