Diagnostic imaging in sellar and parasellar pathology

Abstract. Abstact. Sellar and parasellar region have a complex anatomy and variety of pathologies. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) are the modalities of choice for diagnosis of diseases affecting this region. Applying the standard protocol of examination and systematic approach are mandatory for interpreting of imaging findings. The lecture presents CT and MR findings of common and not so common pathologies of sellar and parasellar region. The most common tumor of sella turcica is pituitary adenoma. It is not always possible to differentiate macroadenoma from non pituitary lesion but some CT and MR findings suggest possibility of non adenomatous lesion. Good knowledge of neuroanatomy and correlation with clinical data are condition sine qua non when interpreting CT and MRI of sellar and parasellar region.
